Carlos Gonzalez was not an all-star in 2010 and when this season is over, he will easilly have one of the greatest seasons by a non-all-star. Currently Cargo is within 3 hr's of leading all three triple crown categories. A triple crown winner who didn't make the all-star team? Amazing. - wyorogers

Id just like to point out the consistent slighting of Padres players. This year is no exception. Padres have the best starting, relief, and Overall ERA in Baseball at the close of voting. Heath Bell (leads majors in saves) was only named to the team because Gallardo was pitching Sunday. This is absurd. Latos with a 10-4 record, a 2.45 ERA. & 99 SO should have gotten more consideration. Pads are used to this, the list does not suprise me. - jpeezypadsfan

Looking at the Play Index, they definitely didn't word it well. But, to be fair, the programming involved to make it All-Star by year isn't necessarily as easy as it sounds. With such a huge database and so many different things going on in the search, it's very understandable if they needed to limit it to something more simple. I'd just think that, if they were planning on releasing it to the public for a while, they'd have spent the time to get the "by year" thing right. To put it another way, it's real easy to had that functionality and do it badly, so being a little conservative is sensible; still, it can be done. - lar @ wezen-ball

If you look at this blog entry http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/7224, you can see that they really did mean to return whether the player had ever been an All-Star. It just didn't occur to me that that might be what they were doing. And I have no idea why they did; it seems (to my totally unqualified English-major-and-law-degree brain) that the programming to do it by year wouldn't be terribly difficult. Oh well. It is interesting anyway.

I think Zobrist is probably a good comparison for Valentin. He was always a good player, but he had just that one year where everything came together perfectly. - Bill@TDS

Thanks again for the piece, Bill. Even if the Play Index didn't give you what you expected it to, it's still a good read. Oh, and don't sweat the mistakes.. they give the post character, see?

I wonder if the Play Index purposefully does that, or if that was a mistake on Sean's part over there... I have half a mind to send him an email and make sure he realizes that's what it's returning...

I remember noticing the 8.5 WAR John Valentin season recently, and trying to figure out how in the world that happened. Was he just the Ben Zobrist of 1995? - lar @ wezen-ball

I've just realized this whole post rests on a false assumption. I assumed, since you're searching individual seasons, that the search looked for players who were not named All-Stars in that season -- but no. For some reason, it asks whether that player was EVER an All-Star. Thus, Hank Greenberg, who had 103 RBI at the break in 1935 but didn't make the team, and ended up with 8.3 WAR, didn't show up in the search, because of course he was an All-Star in many of the seasons that followed.

So what this is then is the best individual seasons by guys who never made an All-Star team. The fact that none of them ever did really should've tipped me off...oh well. - Bill@TDS

Thanks for putting this up, Larry (and thanks, College Wolf). It's driving me a little nuts seeing "(record, ERA)" everywhere. I should have pointed out that I wasn't using those numbers (especially W-L) to actually judge the players' seasons, but to try to determine why they were or were not selected for the team.
There, now I feel better. :) - Bill@TDS

This is fantastic. If I was smart like you guys, I'd come up with some examples off the top of my head... but I am not that smart.

How about Liriano this year? Yeah! - College Wolf
