i know where you got 1974 for the earflaps being mandatory....in 1974 the uprights were moved back in the nfl because some of the players were running into them and getting hurt...who cares about the kickers! - jon e.

I remember reading in the New York Times last august about the S100. David Wright was about the only player quoted as saying he'd put safety first and wear it. Literally the next day he gets taken out by a fastball to the head. Is it any wonder he donned it upon his return? - Thomas Ogilvie

Batting helmets in the field - John Olerud

I remember John Olerud wearing his batting helmet in the field because of a surgery. His helmet had no ear flaps either. - JOCKpost

COM: It's pretty grainy, but if you look at the pic of Hayes wearing the helmet during the game (in 1940), it looks to me like the strap is across is forehead. My gut would also tell me trust how Moore and Hayes wear it in their photos, and not how the man in the Popular Science piece wears it. - lar @ wezen-ball

Frick Helmet Question

I noticed a difference in the way the "Frick" helmet is being worn between the Popular Science photo and the Jackie Hayes photo.

In the Popular Science photo, the strap or band is directly across the top of the man's head, resulting in the earflaps sitting vertically over the ears. Jackie Hayes, and it appears Terry Moore, have the strap across their forehead. This causes the earflaps to sit almost horizontally.

Any idea which way is correct? - Creepy Old Man

This piece really took me back to some great names of another era: the early to mid 1900's, and who knew the history of the helmet would be the vehicle. Great article, great work! -- Tom at Eagles Eye - Tom - Eagles Eye

I remember Shane Victorino donning the s100 for a game. He looked like Gazoo!! Anyway, the helmet was a great idea for obvious reasons. Nice research Lar. Going to bookmark the site. - Jonny5
