They never wil be there Big Lar. Bud would never suspend play for the Olympics or allow the players to leave. He wants to increase international exposure, but will not sacrifice the season. Plus why do you need the Olympics when the WBC is so hot! - jpeezypadsfan

Good points all. I agree with Ron that the IOC just doesn't want it, no matter what. That does make the implementation of WBC make more sense.

And Latrell, you're right. Those games were great. Maybe I'm just making stuff up here, but wasn't that more crowd-driven than player-driven? With hockey, the crowd is a huge part, yes, but the nation v. nation thing comes out on the ice, too. Maybe it's the countries involved, or maybe it's that international competition is much more common in hockey, or maybe it's because I'm seeing things that aren't there, but it seems like a great international hockey match has crowds and players really into it. I don't know if baseball players are there yet (or ever will be). - lar @ wezen-ball
but even I have to admit that it's going to be a long time before we see a WBC version of the USA/Canada game from last night.
Did you not watch the WBC U.S.-Canada game back in March? I was there. It was electric. I think those games are very comparable.

(But please don't mention the fact that the U.S. won both on Canadian soil. )

Baseball in the Olympics isn''t going to happen. Bud doesn't want it, and neither do the European countries that control the IOC.

They sat back and watched while basketball became popular, and tolerate football because the season doesn't last very long.

They want soccer and track and field to dominate the sports scene in Europe, and not an 'American' game.

They aren't going to allow baseball to get a foothold. It will never happen. Never. - Ron R

Okay, time for a serious comment:

Just like hockey or basketball, baseball HAS to have major league players playing all-out to make Olympic baseball viable.

I know he won a World Series MVP, but Pat Borders should never, ever be the catcher for an American Olympic team. - The Hemogoblin

I didn't realize the Olympics were held in 1094... I thought that was an off year. ;) - The Hemogoblin
