World Series Fun: Yankees-Phillies, 1950 World Series E-mail

We began the postseason with eight possible World Series rematches and, though most of those disappeared in the first round, we've somehow wound up with one anyway. When the Phillies and Yankees meet in Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Wednesday, it'll be the second time the two franchises have squared off with the World Championship on the line. The last time they met was in 1950, when the Whiz Kids were swept by the Yanks in a low-scoring Series. It was the second of five consecutive world titles for the Yanks. As the defending World Champs, you can bet the 2009 Phils are expecting a different outcome this year. Whatever the case, it should be a fun Series (as long as you can get past Fox overplaying the whole Philadelphia/New York City angle).

In honor of this World Series rematch, I've pulled out a couple of things to remember the 1950 Fall Classic. Above is an ad from a 1951 Life magazine issue (click on it to be taken to the issue). In the ad, Philly Manager of the Year Ed Sawyer & MVP closer Jim Konstanty and Yankees' ace Vic Raschi (along with Cleveland's Bob Lemon) remind you that "With Baseball's Big Winners, It's Cool, Mild Camels!" Just listen to what Sawyer had to say: "Like most of the boys on my team, I smoke Camels. My own 30-Day Camel Mildness Test proved to me how mild a cigarette can be!"

How can you pass up a pitch like that?

And below, enjoy this brief little recap of the 1950 Series, produced as the two squads were preparing for the 1951 season. It's always great to see video from those mid-century World Series. Who would've thought that it wouldn't be for another 60 years before the two teams met again?

Cool video! I was rooting for a Phillies-Angels World Series, but hey, one team is better than none. The Whiz Kids have always been one of my favorite one-time pennant winners, so I hope this year's Phillies can avenge their loss.

About Me

What's with the name?
"Wezen" is the name of a star in the constellation Canis Major ("The Great Dog"). It's the star that marks the, ahem, point where the dog's tail meets its hindlegs. It's a name that I've always liked the sound of and so I used it around the internet.

When I started this blog, I didn't expect to put a lot of time into it, so I just gave it the first name I could think of. Now I like it, no matter how strange it may sound, and I just love how the new banner and background make use of it.

What's the site about?
There is no real, overriding philosophy guiding the posts here at Wezen-Ball.com. Instead, it's just a place for me to write about what I find interesting in the baseball world. Sometimes that means it'll be original statistical research that I've been working on or some other opinions that I might have. Usually, though, I'll be writing about how a certain player, team, or event from the past was viewed through contemporary accounts.

I do this mostly through the use of my collection of annual baseball preview magazines or other resources available online. So, whether it's looking back to see if Jim Rice was truly "feared"by the people who saw him play, or it's looking back to see how Greg Maddux was viewed early in his career, or if it's just looking back to see what people predicted baseball would be like in the year 2000 (from 1981), you'll find it here.
